Wedding Splurge or Save? Emily’s Tips on What’s Worth the Investment

Planning a wedding comes with a thousand little decisions and let’s be honest, they add up fast. I’ve walked alongside so many couples on their wedding days, and after years of capturing every joyful tear, unexpected giggle, and quiet in-between moment, I’ve learned a thing or two about what’s worth the splurge... and where you can save with peace of heart.

So if you’re in the middle of planning and wondering where to invest or pull back, here are a few heartfelt tips from someone who sees it all unfold, start to finish.

Splurge: Photography (Of Course!)

Okay, I know I’m biased but truly, your photos are one of the only things that last beyond the day itself. When the cake is eaten and the flowers have wilted, your images will carry the legacy of your love forward. Investing in a photographer who sees you, who understands the rhythm of your relationship, and who can tell your story with grace and depth is so, so worth it. Choose someone you trust with your memories (whether that’s me or someone else!), and you’ll never regret it.

Save: Ceremony Programs + Paper Extras

As sweet as these details can be, they often get left behind on chairs or tucked into pockets. If you're feeling the budget pinch, opt for one or two statement paper pieces like a beautiful invitation suite or a welcome sign and keep the rest simple or digital. A heartfelt welcome from your officiant or a handwritten note on your website can be just as meaningful.

Splurge: Hair + Makeup Artists You Trust

Your wedding morning sets the tone for your entire day. Having a professional who makes you feel confident, calm, and completely yourself is worth every penny. Bonus: professional makeup holds up under tears, hugs, and hours of dancing which means you’ll look and feel like you in every frame. Some of my favorite Hair and Makeup artist are linked below!

Save: Favors

Truthfully? Most guests don’t remember the favors. If you want to thank your people (which is beautiful!), think of a meaningful shared moment instead: a late-night s’mores bar, a handwritten letter on their plate, or a group prayer before the ceremony. These gestures leave a lasting imprint, no packaging required.

Splurge: Your Dress (If It Makes You Feel Like You)

This doesn’t mean it has to be designer or blow the budget but if you find the dress and it makes you feel beautiful, strong, and fully like yourself, it’s okay to say yes. This is your day to feel radiant. You’ll remember how you felt in that dress every time you look back at your photos.

Save: Over-the-Top Décor

You don’t need a floral arch in every corner to create magic. I’ve seen the most breathtaking weddings built around a few intentional design elements like one stunning bouquet, a candlelit table, or wildflowers gathered by a friend. Simplicity lets your story shine.

In the End…

Your wedding is about the covenant you're making and the love you're celebrating. Not every detail has to be Pinterest-perfect. The real beauty comes in the joy, the peace, the laughter with your people, and the sacredness of your vows.

Wherever you decide to splurge or save, do it with heart. That’s what makes it yours.
